02 / THE WORK, CONSIDERED

More than a swap.
A safe connection.

CONSIDERED / FROM START TO FINISH

Rating. Circuit. Safety switch.
Checked together.

We read the oven's rating and installation instructions, then check the existing circuit, cable and protection. A like-for-like swap on a sound circuit can be straightforward; a bigger oven may need a new circuit.

When we run a new oven circuit or alter the existing one, it is protected by a 30 mA safety switch (RCD) at the switchboard, as the wiring rules (AS/NZS 3000) require. If your oven circuit has no safety switch now, we will point it out.

OVENS & SAFETY SWITCHES

Does an oven need a safety switch?
Here is how it works.

A safety switch (RCD) cuts the power when it detects current leaking to earth, which reduces the risk of electric shock. For ovens, what is required depends on the work being done.

BUILT-IN OVENS / KITCHEN DETAIL
A new oven circuit
Under the wiring rules (AS/NZS 3000:2018), a new circuit for an oven or cooktop is protected by a 30 mA safety switch at the switchboard.
Altering the circuit
If the existing oven circuit is altered, for example extended or moved, the altered circuit needs safety switch protection too.
A straight swap
Replacing an oven on the same circuit, in the same place, can count as a repair. We still check the circuit and tell you if it has no safety switch.
If it trips after install
An oven that trips the safety switch can have a failed element, a wiring fault or moisture inside. Leave it off and call us rather than resetting it again and again.

We test the circuit and the safety switch after every oven installation and provide a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

OTHER KITCHEN APPLIANCES

Cooktops, dishwashers & more.
Connected properly.

A new oven is often part of a bigger kitchen change. We handle the electrical side of the other appliances too.

Induction cooktops
Most need a dedicated circuit from the switchboard. Our induction cooktop page explains what is involved.
Rangehoods
A power point or hard-wired connection above the cooktop, planned with the duct route.
Dishwashers
A suitable power point under the bench, positioned to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Built-in appliances
Microwaves, coffee machines and warming drawers need power points planned into the cabinetry.
Hard-wired appliances
Other fixed appliances are connected on their own circuit where the instructions require it.

03 / KNOW YOUR SETUP

Before the oven arrives.
Check these first.

The model number and installation instructions tell us most of what we need.

Plug-in or hard-wired
Ovens rated above what a standard power point can supply are hard-wired. Some smaller ovens use a 10 or 15 amp plug, and the outlet has to match.
Circuit & cable
Pyrolytic, double and large freestanding ovens draw more power. We confirm the circuit rating and cable size suit the model.
Safety switch
New or altered oven circuits are protected by a safety switch (RCD) at the switchboard.
Cabinet & ventilation
The opening size and ventilation come from the installation instructions. A 60 cm oven does not fit every 60 cm opening.
Gas ovens
Gas ovens with electric ignition or fans usually need a power point. A licensed gasfitter handles the gas connection.
The old oven
We can disconnect the old oven. Removal and disposal are agreed in the quote.

04 / FROM FIRST LOOK TO FINAL CHECK

Clear at every step.

  1. 01

    Send the model

Tell us the oven model, your suburb and whether it replaces an existing oven.

  2. 02

    Check the requirements

We check the rating, circuit, safety switch and cabinet opening, then confirm the work and price.

  3. 03

    Install & connect

We disconnect the old oven if agreed, then connect the new one once it is in place.

  4. 04

    Test & certify

We test the circuit and safety switch and provide a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

05 / BEFORE WE GET STARTED

Good questions.
Clear answers.

Do you provide oven installation in Mont Albert?

Yes. We cover every part of Mont Albert (VIC 3127). Send your street, the work you need and any access notes, and we will confirm availability and the next step. We also cover Balwyn and Box Hill.

Can you connect a new oven in my Mont Albert home?

Yes. Send the oven's model number and we check its rating against your existing circuit and safety switch, so you know before delivery whether anything needs to change.

Do you work on period homes in Mont Albert?

Yes. Period homes often have lath-and-plaster ceilings, decorative features and older wiring, so we plan access and fixings carefully and check the existing circuits before adding to them.

Do I need an electrician to install an oven?

For a hard-wired oven, yes. Connecting it to the fixed wiring is electrical work for a licensed electrician. A plug-in oven still needs a suitable power point in the right place.

Does my oven need to be on a safety switch?

A new or altered oven circuit is protected by a 30 mA safety switch (RCD) at the switchboard under the wiring rules. A straight swap on the existing circuit can count as a repair, but we will tell you if your oven circuit is unprotected.

Can you reuse the old oven's connection?

Sometimes. If the new oven's rating suits the existing circuit and cable, the swap can be straightforward. We check before connecting.

Can you remove the old oven?

We can disconnect it as part of the job. Lifting, removal and disposal are agreed before the visit.

YOUR HOME / YOUR AREA

Mont Albert.
A clearer next step.

Mont Albert is a suburb of about 4,950 people (2021 Census), where 70% of homes are owner-occupied and 28% are rented. With an average of 2.5 people per household in Mont Albert, oven upgrades are often about features such as pyrolytic cleaning rather than size. In older homes, the existing oven circuit may be too small for a new oven or may have no safety switch, which we check before connecting. For comparison, the share of homes that are separate houses in Mont Albert (54%) falls between neighbouring Balwyn (58%) and Box Hill (22%).

Mont Albert is about 19 km south-east of our Lalor base, in Melbourne's east, near Mont Albert station. Mont Albert sits within the Whitehorse council area. Next door, we also cover Balwyn, Box Hill, Box Hill North and Mont Albert North.
