Running power to a garage, shed, or workshop is one of the most common residential electrical jobs we do. Whether you need a few power points and lights for a home workshop, or a full sub-board with dedicated circuits for welders and compressors, Voltra Electrical handles the complete installation. We run underground or overhead cabling from your main switchboard to the outbuilding, install a sub-board with appropriate circuit breakers and safety switches, and fit out the interior with lighting and power points to your requirements. All work complies with AS/NZS 3000 and includes a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

The scope of a garage or shed power installation depends on what you'll be using the space for. A basic setup (lights + 2–3 general power points) can often run from an existing circuit. A workshop with power tools, welders, or compressors needs a dedicated sub-board with individual circuits sized for the equipment. We assess your requirements during the quoting stage and recommend the right approach. Underground cabling is the most common method — we use conduit-protected TPS or XLPE cable buried to the required depth (300mm under concrete, 500mm under soil). Overhead cabling is an option where trenching isn't practical. The sub-board includes its own safety switch (RCD) and circuit breakers, providing independent protection for the outbuilding.

How do you run power to a detached garage or shed?

We run cabling underground in conduit (most common) or overhead between buildings. Underground is neater and more protected — we trench to the required depth and backfill after installation.

Do I need a sub-board in my shed?

For basic lighting and a couple of power points, you may not need one. For workshops with multiple circuits or heavy equipment, a sub-board is required — it provides independent safety switch protection and proper circuit separation.

Can you install power for a welder or compressor?

Yes — we install dedicated circuits rated for your specific equipment. Welders and large compressors typically need 15A or 20A dedicated circuits, sometimes 3-phase for industrial equipment.

How long does a shed power installation take?

A basic installation (trench + sub-board + lights + power points) typically takes 1–2 days. Larger workshops with multiple circuits may take 2–3 days.
