THE RIGHT ALARM. THE RIGHT LOCATION.

Planned around
the home you live in.

We look at the layout, existing wiring and alarms together. Photoelectric detection, mains power with battery backup and compatible interconnection each have a role in choosing the right setup.

We explain what applies to your property before the work begins. No need to identify a model or understand the wiring yourself.

03 / KNOW YOUR SETUP

Clear advice.
For your home.

Minimum requirements and added protection are different conversations. We explain both, with the building and its history in mind.

Detection
Photoelectric alarms detect smoke from smouldering fires. We discuss suitable models and check compatibility with the rest of the installation.
Power & connection
Hardwired alarms use mains electricity with battery backup. Interconnected alarms sound together; the connection may be wired or wireless, using compatible products.
Placement
Working alarms are required in Victorian homes. CFA and FRV recommend additional coverage in bedrooms and living areas. We assess the required locations and any recommended additions separately.
Rental properties
Annual smoke alarm testing applies to Victorian rental properties. We discuss the alarm work and documentation you need; an alarm visit is separate from a full rental electrical safety check.

CFA: caring for smoke alarms
Do you provide smoke alarm installation in Mernda?

Yes. We cover every part of Mernda (VIC 3754). Send your street, the work you need and any access notes, and we will confirm availability and the next step. We also cover Doreen and South Morang.

How many smoke alarms does a Mernda home need?

It depends on the floor plan, the number of levels and where people sleep. We assess the home and explain where alarms should go. Many Mernda houses are larger, with four or more bedrooms, which usually means more alarms.

My Mernda home is only a few years old. Is smoke alarm installation straightforward?

Usually. Newer homes generally have a modern switchboard with safety switches, although insulation, ceiling space and slab construction still affect cable routes. 55% of Mernda homes were mortgaged at the 2021 Census.

Why does my alarm keep chirping?

A chirp may indicate a battery warning, fault or end-of-life signal. Check the manufacturer's guidance and arrange help if it persists. Do not disconnect an alarm to silence it. If there is smoke or fire, leave the property and call 000.

Can you help with a rental property?

Yes. We can discuss smoke alarm testing, replacement and installation with rental providers and property managers. Consumer Affairs Victoria requires smoke alarms in rental properties to be tested at least every twelve months. This is separate from the property's electrical safety check.

What maintenance do alarms need?

CFA recommends monthly testing and annual cleaning. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your model and battery type. Long-life batteries do not remove the need for routine testing. Arrange help if you cannot safely reach the alarm.

How much will the work cost?

The scope depends on the number of alarms, their power source, interconnection and access. Share your suburb and what you already know. We confirm the work and price before starting; photos are helpful but optional.

YOUR HOME / YOUR AREA

Mernda.
A clearer next step.

The 2021 Census counted about 7,880 dwellings in Mernda, home to about 23,370 people with a median age of 33. 64% of separate houses in Mernda have four or more bedrooms, and the number of alarms a home needs depends on its layout and bedrooms. 27% of households rent, and in rental homes smoke alarms must be tested every year. By comparison, the share of households renting is lower in neighbouring Doreen (21%) and South Morang (21%).
