SWITCHBOARD UPGRADES / ALTONA MEADOWS / 3028 Switchboard
upgrades.
Ready for today.

From the original fuse board
to a more considered electrical setup.

02 / WHAT CHANGES BEHIND THE COVER

Different jobs.
Working together.

A modern switchboard brings the right protective devices together. We explain what is being fitted and why it belongs in your installation.

Circuit breakers
Protect circuits against overloads and short circuits.
Safety switches
Detect current leaking from a circuit and disconnect power to reduce the risk of electric shock. They provide additional protection, not a guarantee against every electrical injury.
Combined protection
An RCBO combines safety-switch and circuit-breaker functions in one device. We select protection to suit the circuits and the installation.
A clear, considered layout
Labelled circuits, a suitable enclosure and space planned around the agreed work make the board easier to understand and maintain.

THREE-PHASE POWER

Three-phase upgrades.
More capacity, planned.

Most Melbourne homes have single-phase power. A three-phase supply spreads the load across three phases, which can suit homes adding large loads such as ducted air conditioning, a faster EV charger or a larger solar system. It is not always needed, so we check first.

THREE-PHASE METER PANEL / VOLTRA ELECTRICAL
Do you need it?
We look at what the home runs now and what you plan to add. Sometimes a switchboard upgrade or load management on single phase is enough.
Distributor approval
Changing the supply needs approval from your electricity distributor. We lodge the request through your retailer and coordinate the connection.
Meter, mains & switchboard
A three-phase supply usually involves a new meter, a larger mains cable to the board and a switchboard set up for three phases.
Planned power interruption
The changeover needs the power off. We agree the timing with you and the distributor before the day.
Testing & certificate
We test the installation and provide a Certificate of Electrical Safety for the electrical installation work.

SURGE PROTECTION

Surge protection.
Fitted at the switchboard.

A surge protection device in the switchboard helps protect the home's wiring and appliances from sudden voltage spikes, such as those from lightning or faults on the network. It is often added during a switchboard upgrade.

SURGE PROTECTION IN A SWITCHBOARD / VOLTRA ELECTRICAL
What it does
It diverts a sudden spike in voltage to earth before it travels through your circuits. It reduces the risk of damage; it cannot stop every surge.
Not a safety switch
Surge protection guards equipment against voltage spikes. Safety switches protect people from electric shock. A modern board can have both.
Whole house or power board
A switchboard device covers the whole installation. Plug-in surge boards add a second layer for TVs, computers and other sensitive equipment.
What it needs
Space on the board and a sound earth. We check both, and fit it with an upgrade or as a separate job.
Solar, batteries & EV chargers
Homes with solar inverters, batteries or EV chargers have more electronics on the supply, so surge protection is worth discussing at the same time.
Check the indicator
Many devices have a status window that shows when the cartridge needs replacing, like the one pictured.

SOLAR, BATTERY & EV READY

Ready for what comes next.
Solar, a battery or an EV.

Solar, home batteries and EV chargers all connect through the switchboard. Planning for them during an upgrade saves reworking the board later.

Space for new circuits
We leave room on the board for the circuits and protection that new equipment will need.
Supply & capacity
We check the main switch rating and supply against what you plan to add, and explain if load management or a supply upgrade is worth considering.
EV chargers
A home charger usually needs its own circuit. Planning it with the upgrade avoids opening the board twice.
Working with your solar installer
If a solar or battery installer is connecting later, we prepare the board and can coordinate with them.
Clear labelling
Solar and battery systems add extra isolation points. Clear labels help anyone working on the board later.

WHAT AFFECTS THE PRICE

What affects the price?
The factors, explained.

Every switchboard is different, so we give a fixed written price after seeing yours. These are the things that change it.

Number of circuits
More circuits mean more protection devices, and every circuit is tested.
Safety switch arrangement
Individual safety switches (RCBOs) on each circuit, or shared safety switches, change the parts and the layout.
The meter panel
Older meter panels can be worn or may contain asbestos. If the panel needs replacing or specialist removal, we explain that before quoting.
Earthing & existing wiring
Testing can find earthing or wiring faults that need fixing before the new board is turned on.
Mains & supply
Some upgrades also need a new mains cable or a supply change through your distributor.
Independent inspection
A main switchboard replacement is inspected by an independent licensed electrical inspector before power is restored.

04 / FROM FIRST LOOK TO FINAL CHECK

Clear at every step.

  1. 01

    Assess the existing setup.

We check the board, existing circuits, earthing and planned additions. Tell us about any recurring faults and what you want to add in future.

  2. 02

    Agree on the work.

You receive a clear scope and written price. We explain the proposed equipment, any additional work and the planned power interruption before booking.

  3. 03

    Install, label and test.

We replace the agreed equipment, identify the circuits and carry out electrical testing. Any existing wiring issues are explained rather than hidden by a new enclosure.

  4. 04

    Inspect and hand over.

For a residential main switchboard replacement, an independent licensed electrical inspector must inspect the work before power is restored. We arrange the required inspection and Certificate of Electrical Safety, and explain your new setup.

Energy Safe Victoria: inspection before reconnection

05 / BEFORE YOU BOOK

Good questions.
Clear answers.

Do you provide switchboard upgrades in Altona Meadows?

Yes. We cover every part of Altona Meadows (VIC 3028). Include your street and a short description of the job, and we will come back to you about timing. We also cover Altona and Laverton.

Does my Altona Meadows home need a switchboard upgrade?

Not always. In newer Altona Meadows homes the board is usually modern; the question is whether it has room and capacity for what you want to add. We inspect the board and explain what needs to change before any work is agreed.

Will my Altona Meadows switchboard handle solar or a home battery?

It depends on the board's space, protection and the supply. 347 home batteries have been installed in postcode 3028 since July 2025 (Clean Energy Regulator), and each one connects through the switchboard. We check the board before new equipment is added and explain any changes it needs.

How long will the power be off?

Power needs to be isolated during the replacement. The duration depends on the existing installation and the work required, including inspection before reconnection. We confirm the expected outage when planning the job so you can organise access and anything that relies on power.

Does a new switchboard mean the house needs rewiring?

Not necessarily. A switchboard upgrade and a house rewire are different jobs. Testing may identify wiring defects that need attention, but we explain those findings and the proposed scope rather than assume the whole house needs rewiring.

Will I receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety?

Yes. Electrical installation work in Victoria requires a Certificate of Electrical Safety. A residential main switchboard replacement also requires independent inspection before it is energised. Voltra Electrical is a registered electrical contractor, REC 37324.

Do you do three-phase power upgrades?

Yes. We first check whether three-phase is actually needed for what you plan to run. If it is, we handle the switchboard work and lodge the supply request through your retailer for the distributor's approval.

YOUR HOME / YOUR AREA

Altona Meadows.
A clearer next step.

About 18,500 people live in Altona Meadows, in about 7,120 occupied homes (2021 Census). Altona Meadows has homes from several decades, so boards range from original fuse panels to modern safety-switch boards. 38% of homes are owned outright, often by long-term owners whose board has never been replaced. By comparison, the share of homes owned outright is lower in neighbouring Altona (36%) and Laverton (22%).

In postcode 3028, about 3,360 rooftop solar systems have been installed since 2001 and 347 home batteries since July 2025 (Clean Energy Regulator). Solar inverters and batteries connect at the switchboard, so its space and protection matter as more homes add them.

Our Lalor base is about 31 km from Altona Meadows, which lies to the south-west, in Melbourne's west, near Central Square and Cheetham Wetlands. Altona Meadows sits within the Hobsons Bay council area. The same service is available in nearby Altona, Laverton, Williamstown and Hoppers Crossing.
