CONSIDERED / FROM START TO FINISH

Opening. Driver. Control.
Every part considered.

We check the existing fitting and ceiling opening before selecting a replacement. Trim size alone does not confirm that a fitting will suit the space above the ceiling.

The chosen model’s insulation and clearance instructions matter. We also allow for access to the driver and check the intended dimmer combination.

Plan your downlights

HALOGEN TO LED

Still on halogens?
Switching to LED.

Older halogen downlights run hot and use far more power than LEDs for the same light. Replacing them is a common upgrade in older Melbourne homes.

Less power, less heat
LED downlights give similar light for a fraction of the power and run much cooler than halogen globes.
Old transformers
Most halogen downlights run from a transformer in the ceiling. A replacement LED usually comes with its own driver, so the old transformer comes out.
The old holes
Where possible we choose fittings that suit the existing cut-outs, so there is less patching.
Insulation
Many LED fittings are rated for contact with insulation. We check each fitting's rating before insulation goes back around it.
Dimmers
Old halogen dimmers often do not suit LEDs and can cause flicker. We match the dimmer to the new fittings.
Light colour
Choose warm white, natural white or a selectable colour, and keep it consistent from room to room.

03 / KNOW YOUR SETUP

Choose the light.
Check the ceiling.

Bring photos of the room and existing fittings. There is no need to remove anything yourself.

Placement
Aim light where it is useful while considering glare, shadows and furniture positions.
Colour & brightness
Compare the desired light colour and output with adjacent rooms. Wattage alone is not a measure of useful brightness.
Ceiling & insulation
Cut-out size, ceiling depth and the model’s installation rating determine suitability around insulation and building elements.
Dimming
Confirm compatibility between the LED fitting, driver and control before buying replacement units.

05 / BEFORE WE GET STARTED

Good questions.
Clear answers.

Do you provide downlight installation in Mont Albert?

Yes. We cover every part of Mont Albert (VIC 3127). Send your street, the work you need and any access notes, and we will confirm availability and the next step. We also cover Balwyn and Box Hill.

Can you replace old halogen downlights in Mont Albert?

Yes. We replace halogen fittings and transformers with LED downlights, check the ceiling insulation and confirm dimmer compatibility. Halogens are still common in Mont Albert's older homes.

Do you work on period homes in Mont Albert?

Yes. Period homes often have lath-and-plaster ceilings, decorative features and older wiring, so we plan access and fixings carefully and check the existing circuits before adding to them.

Will my dimmer work with new LEDs?

It needs checking against the fitting and driver. An old dimmer may need replacement for suitable operation.

Can downlights be covered by insulation?

Only as permitted by the specific product’s rating and instructions. We assess the selected fitting and its installation conditions; do not move insulation around lights yourself.

Will new fittings cover the old holes?

That depends on the opening and fitting dimensions. We discuss suitable replacements or any required ceiling repair before starting.

Can you match the light colour across rooms?

We can plan compatible colour and output across the chosen fittings. Existing products can vary, so an exact match is not assumed from a colour label alone.

YOUR HOME / YOUR AREA

Mont Albert.
A clearer next step.

Mont Albert is a suburb of about 4,950 people (2021 Census), where 70% of homes are owner-occupied and 28% are rented. 54% of Mont Albert homes are separate houses and 35% are townhouses or semis, most with roof space above the ceiling. Older homes often still have halogen downlights and transformers, which are worth replacing with LED fittings rated for insulation contact. We plan spacing so the light is even, not spotty. For comparison, the share of homes that are flats or apartments in Mont Albert (11%) is lower than in neighbouring Balwyn (15%) and Box Hill (53%).

Mont Albert is about 19 km south-east of our Lalor base, in Melbourne's east, near Mont Albert station. Mont Albert sits within the Whitehorse council area. Next door, we also cover Balwyn, Box Hill, Box Hill North and Mont Albert North.
