Downlight Installation

Downlight Installation

New LED downlights, halogen-to-LED conversions, or a full room layout? Voltra Electrical installs downlights across Melbourne — dimmable, smart, and positioned for the best result in every room.

Downlights are one of the most popular lighting choices in Melbourne homes — and one of the most commonly installed incorrectly. Poorly spaced downlights create dark spots and glare. Old halogen downlights run hot, burn out constantly, and are a genuine fire risk in insulated ceilings. Voltra Electrical installs LED downlights across Melbourne suburbs — new layouts, halogen-to-LED conversions, dimmable options, and smart downlights that integrate with your home automation system. We advise on spacing and layout before we start, so every room is evenly lit without hotspots or dark corners. We install fire-rated downlights where required (insulated ceilings), IP-rated downlights for bathrooms and outdoor areas, and dimmable downlights with compatible dimmer switches that don't flicker. All downlight installation work is carried out by our licensed electrician (REC: 37324) and complies with AS/NZS 3000 wiring standards. Looking for a broader lighting upgrade including feature lighting, pendants, or outdoor lighting? See our Lighting & LED Upgrades page for the full picture.

The difference between a well-lit room and a poorly-lit one often comes down to downlight placement. Too few downlights and you get dark corners. Too many and the ceiling looks cluttered. The wrong colour temperature and the room feels clinical or dingy. At Voltra Electrical, we take the time to plan the layout before we start cutting holes — assessing the room size, ceiling height, and how the space is used to recommend the right number, spacing, and colour temperature. For halogen-to-LED conversions, we replace the old fittings entirely rather than just swapping globes — this ensures the new LEDs are properly supported, earthed, and sealed against insulation contact. Old halogen transformers are removed and replaced with LED-compatible drivers where required. We also check that your existing dimmer switches are compatible with LED fittings — many older dimmers cause LED flickering and need to be replaced with LED-rated dimmers as part of the job. For new layouts, we cut new holes, run cabling from the nearest circuit, and install the fittings to a clean finish. We patch any test holes and leave the ceiling looking tidy. For bathrooms, we use IP-rated downlights in the correct zones as required by AS/NZS 3000. For insulated ceilings, we use fire-rated fittings that maintain the ceiling's fire resistance rating. If you want smart downlights that can be dimmed, colour-tuned, or controlled by voice or app, we can install smart-compatible fittings and connect them to your chosen ecosystem. See our Smart Home & Automation page for more on smart lighting options.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many downlights do I need per room?

As a general guide, one downlight per 1.2–1.5 square metres of floor area works well for most rooms. The exact number depends on ceiling height, room shape, and whether you want ambient or task lighting. We'll advise on the right layout before we start.

Are old halogen downlights a fire risk?

Yes, particularly in insulated ceilings. Halogen downlights run at very high temperatures and can ignite insulation if it's in contact with or too close to the fitting. Replacing halogens with LED downlights eliminates this risk and significantly reduces your energy use.

Can I get dimmable LED downlights?

Yes. We install dimmable LED downlights throughout Melbourne. It's important to use a compatible LED dimmer switch — many older dimmers cause flickering with LED fittings. We'll ensure the right dimmer is installed as part of the job.

Can downlights be controlled by a smart home system?

Yes. We can install smart downlights that connect to Google Home, Amazon Alexa, or Apple HomeKit, allowing you to control brightness, colour temperature, and scenes by app or voice. See our Smart Home & Automation page for more details.

Are you licensed for downlight installation in Victoria?

Yes. Voltra Electrical holds Electrical Contractor Licence REC: 37324 and is fully insured. All downlight installation work is completed to AS/NZS 3000 wiring standards.
