We check the existing fitting and ceiling opening before selecting a replacement. Trim size alone does not confirm that a fitting will suit the space above the ceiling.
The chosen model’s insulation and clearance instructions matter. We also allow for access to the driver and check the intended dimmer combination.

Switching to LED.
Older halogen downlights run hot and use far more power than LEDs for the same light. Replacing them is a common upgrade in older Melbourne homes.
- Less power, less heat
- LED downlights give similar light for a fraction of the power and run much cooler than halogen globes.
- Old transformers
- Most halogen downlights run from a transformer in the ceiling. A replacement LED usually comes with its own driver, so the old transformer comes out.
- The old holes
- Where possible we choose fittings that suit the existing cut-outs, so there is less patching.
- Insulation
- Many LED fittings are rated for contact with insulation. We check each fitting's rating before insulation goes back around it.
- Dimmers
- Old halogen dimmers often do not suit LEDs and can cause flicker. We match the dimmer to the new fittings.
- Light colour
- Choose warm white, natural white or a selectable colour, and keep it consistent from room to room.

Can LEDs replace existing halogen downlights?
Usually there are suitable options, but the opening, wiring, driver and ceiling conditions need checking. Some jobs require a complete new fitting rather than only a lamp.
How many downlights does a room need?
Room size, ceiling height, fitting output and the tasks in the room all matter. A fixed number per square metre is not a substitute for considering the space.
Will my dimmer work with new LEDs?
It needs checking against the fitting and driver. An old dimmer may need replacement for suitable operation.
Can downlights be covered by insulation?
Only as permitted by the specific product’s rating and instructions. We assess the selected fitting and its installation conditions; do not move insulation around lights yourself.
Will new fittings cover the old holes?
That depends on the opening and fitting dimensions. We discuss suitable replacements or any required ceiling repair before starting.
Can you match the light colour across rooms?
We can plan compatible colour and output across the chosen fittings. Existing products can vary, so an exact match is not assumed from a colour label alone.
