The difference, explained.
A rangehood either sends cooking steam and smells outside through a duct, or filters the air and returns it to the kitchen. The choice depends on the model, the kitchen and where a duct can run.
- Ducted
- Air is drawn through the filters and out through a duct to the outside. It removes moisture as well as smells, but needs a practical route through a wall or the roof.
- Recirculating
- Air passes through grease and carbon filters and returns to the room. It suits kitchens where a duct cannot run, but it does not remove moisture, and the carbon filters need replacing.
- The duct route
- Shorter, straighter ducts work better. Bends, long runs and undersized ducts reduce how well the rangehood performs.
- The electrical side
- A power point or hard-wired connection above the cooktop, positioned to the installation instructions and reachable for servicing.
- Other trades
- Roof or wall penetrations and cabinet changes may need a builder or cabinet maker. We make clear what our quote includes.

Provide both rangehood and cooktop model details, plus photos of the existing kitchen.
- Mounting & dimensions
- Built-in, canopy and other styles need different support and space. Nominal width does not confirm a direct replacement.
- Clearances
- Follow the applicable appliance instructions and installation requirements. A single generic clearance is not suitable for every combination.
- Extraction
- Plan the duct route and outlet, or the model’s supported recirculation arrangement. Filters and duct accessories vary.
- Electrical access
- The connection must suit the product and remain appropriately accessible. Moving the appliance may require electrical alterations.

Can a new rangehood fit the same opening?
Possibly, but mounting, depth, height and duct position need checking as well as width. Send the model details before purchase where possible.
Do you install ducting as well?
We clarify any included duct and outlet work in the quote. Roof penetrations, cabinetry and other building work may require separate arrangements.
What height should the rangehood be above the cooktop?
The rangehood and cooktop instructions and relevant installation requirements determine the position. We check the actual models rather than use one measurement for every kitchen.
Can a rangehood recirculate instead of duct outside?
Only where the selected model and installation allow it, with the required filters and components. Suitability and limitations should be considered before choosing the arrangement.
Can you repair the rangehood motor?
Internal appliance repair may require a manufacturer service agent. We can assess the electrical connection and discuss replacement installation where appropriate.
Is removing the old rangehood included?
Disconnection, removal, access and disposal should be confirmed in the quote. Do not assume they are included without discussing the existing setup.
