CONSIDERED / FROM START TO FINISH

Outside, the details matter.
Rating, height and protection.

Outdoor outlets are chosen for their exposure to rain and sun, and positioned with water runoff, garden watering and foot traffic in mind. Where something stays plugged in, a cover that closes over the plug helps keep water out.

New power circuits are protected by a safety switch (RCD), and the cable route from the house is planned to stay protected, whether it runs through a wall, along a structure or underground.

03 / KNOW YOUR SETUP

Plan the spot.
Then the route.

A photo of the area and a list of what you will plug in are useful starting points.

What you will plug in
Heaters, fridges, pumps and tools draw different amounts. Tell us what will run there so the circuit and outlet suit it.
Position & height
Away from where water collects or sprays, within easy reach, and clear of doors, gates and garden beds.
Cable route
Through an external wall, along a structure or underground. Underground runs need the route and existing services checked first.
Weather exposure
A covered alfresco and an open garden are different. The exposure decides the outlet and cover type.

04 / FROM FIRST LOOK TO FINAL CHECK

05 / BEFORE WE GET STARTED

Good questions.
Clear answers.

Do you provide outdoor power point installation in Doreen?

Yes. We cover every part of Doreen (VIC 3754), on both the Nillumbik and Whittlesea sides of the council boundary. Include your street and a short description of the job, and we will come back to you about timing. We also cover Mernda and South Morang.

Where do people usually add outdoor power in Doreen?

Alfrescos and decks for heaters and lighting, garage and carport walls for tools, and garden areas for pumps and lighting. We plan the position around water, foot traffic and the cable route.

My Doreen home is only a few years old. Is outdoor power point installation straightforward?

Usually. Newer homes generally have a modern switchboard with safety switches, although insulation, ceiling space and slab construction still affect cable routes. 58% of Doreen homes were mortgaged at the 2021 Census.

Can you add a power point outside my house?

Usually, yes. We look at where you want it, what you will plug in and the cable route from a suitable circuit or the switchboard before confirming the scope.

What makes an outdoor power point weatherproof?

Outdoor outlets have a higher weather rating and a cover that closes over the socket. Where something stays plugged in, a cover that closes over the plug as well helps keep water out.

Can I run a heater, fridge or pump from it?

Tell us the appliance and its rating. Higher-demand equipment may need its own circuit rather than sharing one with indoor outlets.

Can I charge my electric car from an outdoor power point?

A standard outlet can charge slowly, which suits occasional use. For regular charging, a dedicated EV charger on its own circuit is the better option, and we can assess both.

YOUR HOME / YOUR AREA

Doreen.
A clearer next step.

Doreen is a suburb of about 27,120 people (2021 Census), where 77% of homes are owner-occupied and 21% are rented. 95% of Doreen homes are separate houses, most with a yard, deck or garage wall where an outdoor outlet is useful. Newer homes often have an alfresco that was finished with little or no power. By comparison, the share of homes that are separate houses is lower in neighbouring Mernda (89%) and South Morang (84%).

From Lalor, Doreen is roughly 14 km to the north-east, in Melbourne's outer north, near Laurimar Town Centre and the Plenty River Trail. Doreen is split between the Nillumbik council area (about 55% of the suburb) and Whittlesea. We also work in neighbouring Mernda, South Morang, Mill Park and Whittlesea.
